Insider Tips

  • Confirm last tender time. Borgholm is a tender port — missing the last boat means a long detour. Check the ship's schedule before heading off for the day.
  • 🚴
Rent a bike. Öland is flat, beautiful, and perfect cycling territory. Several rental shops are near the harbour. It's the best way to see more of the island in a half-day.
  • 💵
Sweden is card-friendly. Swedish Krona (SEK) is the currency; virtually everywhere accepts cards. Carrying cash is rarely necessary.
  • 🕐
Short calls happen. Some itineraries only give 5-6 hours in Borgholm — prioritise the castle and town over long bus trips south if time is tight.
  • 🌤️
Summer weather is mild but variable. June–August averages 17-21°C. A light windproof layer is useful near the Kalmar Strait.
