Getting Ashore

Bintulu has a modern deepwater port — cruise ships berth at the commercial port area, with the town centre and waterfront about 2 km away.

Getting Into Town

  • 1
Walk or taxi from the pierThe port gate is roughly 2 km from the Bintulu Waterfront Promenade. Taxis and GrabCar (Grab app) wait at the terminal exit; expect RM 8–15 to the town centre.
  • 2
Grab app for wider areaDownload the Grab app before arriving — it's the reliable rideshare across Malaysia. Similajau National Park is ~30 km north; a day hire of a local driver costs RM 80–120.
  • 3
Currency and connectivityATMs (Maybank, CIMB) are near Pasar Utama in the town centre. Malaysian Ringgit is the only practical currency; USD/EUR not widely accepted. Local SIM cards (Maxis, Celcom) at the airport or phone shops in town.

💡 Pro move: Bintulu is primarily an LNG and industrial port, not a dedicated cruise terminal — signage is limited. Confirm shuttle or taxi arrangements with your cruise line before disembarking.

Similajau National Park

About 30 km north of town, Similajau protects 7,000 ha of coastal rainforest and some of Sarawak's most untouched beaches. Turtle Beach and Golden Beach are the highlights — jungle trails thread through dipterocarp forest, and guides regularly spot gibbons, hornbills, and saltwater crocodiles along the river mouth.

Wildlife

Sebauh River Wildlife Cruise

A motorboat cruise up the Sebauh River, inland from Bintulu, offers chances to spot long-tailed macaques, kingfishers, hornbills, and possibly crocodiles along the forested riverbanks and village waterways. Local guides run half-day trips — a good alternative if Similajau is sold out or time is tight.

Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Rain is frequent year-round. Bintulu sits near the equator — afternoon downpours are common even outside official monsoon season (Oct–Feb). Pack a compact rain jacket.
  • 🐊
Crocodiles are real. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the Kemena River and surrounding waterways. Do not swim in rivers or mangroves — stick to patrolled beaches like Tanjung Batu or Similajau's designated areas.
  • 🍜
Eat Sarawak Laksa for breakfast. It's the signature dish — a coconut-herb broth with rice vermicelli, prawns, and chicken. Pasar Utama and riverside coffee shops serve it from 7 AM. Far better than anything on the ship.
  • 📱
Download Grab before you arrive. It's the standard rideshare across Malaysia and avoids haggling. Works reliably in Bintulu town; less so in remote areas near Similajau.
  • 🏭
This is an industrial port, not a cruise hub. There are no dedicated shore-excursion desks or tourist infrastructure at the pier. Pre-book tours through your ship or a local operator, or organise a private driver for the day.
