Insider Tips

  • Expedition-only stop. If you're on a large cruise ship, Awendaw is not your port — you'll be in Charleston. This call is exclusive to small expedition vessels.
  • 🦟
Bug spray is essential. The Lowcountry marshes breed serious mosquitoes and no-see-ums, especially May–September. Pack DEET-based repellent.
  • 🌡️
Heat and humidity are real. Summer calls (June–September) are hot and muggy. Wear moisture-wicking clothing, bring plenty of water, and start trails early.
  • 🦅
Birding is world-class. Cape Romain NWR sits on the Atlantic Flyway — bring binoculars. The refuge hosts American avocets, black-necked stilts, painted buntings, and nesting loggerhead turtles.
  • 🍤
Try Sewee Restaurant. A short drive south on US-17, this local institution serves fried shrimp, oysters, and Lowcountry sides that are the real deal.
