Insider Tips

  • 🕐
Call time is short: Augusta is a half-day port for most itineraries. Prioritize Baker-Bird Winery and the Civil War walk — you can do both comfortably in 3-4 hours.
  • 💵
Bring small cash: Many small shops and the ferry are cash-preferred. There's an ATM in town but it can run dry on ship days.
  • 🥃
Baker-Bird fills up fast: When a river cruise ship is in port, the distillery gets crowded. Head there first or last rather than midday.
  • Ferry tip: The Augusta Ferry is a working vehicle ferry, not a tourist boat — crossings happen when it's ready, not on a fixed schedule. Check at the landing before counting on a specific departure.
  • 📅
Jail visits need advance notice: The 1811 Augusta Jail isn't open walk-in. Contact the Augusta/Bracken County Tourism Office (+1 606-756-2183) ahead of time if you want inside.
