Insider Tips

  • ☀️
Weather changes fast in the Azores — bring a light rain layer even on a sunny morning. Locals say: if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes.
  • 🚶
Wear real shoes — the historic center's cobblestones are beautiful but uneven and can be slippery when wet.
  • 🌋
Book Algar do Carvão early — the cave has limited daily capacity and cruise day visits fill up. Reserve through your ship or a local operator in advance.
  • 🐋
Whale watching is weather-dependent — trips may be cancelled if seas are rough. Ask about the cancellation/refund policy before booking independently.
  • 💶
Cash and cards both work — most restaurants and shops in the city center accept cards, but carry a few euros for small cafés and market stalls.
