Insider Tips

  • 🛂
Permit is mandatory. Anadyr is a restricted border zone. Your ship must pre-arrange a group entry permit (propusk) — you cannot get one on arrival. Confirm access with your cruise line before embarkation.
  • 💶
Bring Russian rubles. USD and EUR are rarely accepted in shops. There are ATMs in town but reliability is inconsistent — bring some pre-exchanged rubles if possible, or buy local crafts from ship-organised vendors at the quay.
  • 🌡️
Dress for Arctic weather. Even in July and August temperatures hover around 8–12°C with strong winds off the estuary. Waterproofs and layers are essential; ship's tenders can be wet and cold.
  • 📶
No roaming, limited Wi-Fi. International mobile roaming rarely works in Chukotka. Most cafes and the museum have limited Wi-Fi. Download offline maps before going ashore.
  • 🎨
Look up. Anadyr's Soviet-era apartments are painted in vivid colours to combat the grey Arctic winter — and decorated with enormous murals. The city is essentially an open-air gallery.
