One of the Pacific's rawest adventure stops — two active volcanic cones, a vast volcanic caldera, and living traditions that have survived untouched for centuries. Ambrym rewards the curious and the intrepid.
Ambrym is a remote tender port with no cruise terminal — small ships anchor in the bay and ferry passengers ashore.
💡 Pro move: Only expedition and small luxury ships (typically under 500 passengers) call at Ambrym. Check VMGD volcanic alert levels before trekking — guides will not proceed in unsafe conditions.
No pier exists at Ambrym — all cruise calls are by tender to a village landing at Port Vato.

Ambrym's big draw is raw volcanic adventure; cultural ceremonies run a close second.
Hike across the vast ash plain to the rim of one — or both — of Ambrym's legendary craters. Mount Marum (1,270 m) and Mount Benbow (1,159 m) sit inside a caldera roughly 12 km across. The persistent lava lakes that once made Ambrym famous largely drained after the major 2018 eruption, but the smoking, ash-strewn craters and vigorous degassing remain an unforgettable spectacle — and activity can flare at any time.
Find volcano trek tours →In villages like Fanla and Ranon, masked Rom dancers perform one of Vanuatu's most sacred rituals. Some tours also include a black magic demonstration by specially trained elders — a rare and striking cultural encounter.
Find cultural ceremony tours →Ambrym sand drawing is UNESCO-recognised intangible heritage. Village artisans trace intricate geometric patterns in sand with a single continuous line, and the island's huge tam-tam and fern-wood carvings are among the finest in Vanuatu.
Find village art tours →A deep crater lake formed by the catastrophic 1913 eruption — once a sheltered lagoon, it was sealed off into a lake by the blast. Surrounded by jungle and accessed by local boat from the coast, the setting is hauntingly beautiful and perfect for photography.
Find crater lake tours →Some expedition lines offer Zodiac cruises along Ambrym's volcanic coastline, with snorkelling in clear, warm waters. Coral reefs and colourful fish are a gentler alternative for those skipping the volcano trek.
Find snorkel and Zodiac tours →Port Vato village is walkable from the tender landing; anything beyond requires a guide.
From the tender landing, a short walk through Port Vato village lets you meet locals, browse carvings laid out for sale, and absorb daily island life. The jungle-fringed coast offers good photography.
