Amasra is a rare Black Sea port where Roman walls, Byzantine churches, and Genoese towers all crowd a single rocky peninsula — and the seafood is outstanding. Most ships call just long enough to walk the whole thing.
Most cruise ships dock at Amasra's newer floating pier; a handful of expedition-style vessels may tender into the harbor.
💡 Pro move: Port Bartın (about 17 km southeast) is sometimes used when Amasra pier is occupied; taxis or shuttle buses cover the transfer in ~20 minutes.
Amasra's new pier accommodates most cruise ships directly in the harbor; tender operations apply for some smaller vessels.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines | Amasra Cruise Pier, Büyük Liman📍 | Docked |
| Expedition / small ships | Amasra Harbor anchorage📍 | Tendered |
| Overflow (some itineraries) | Port Bartın, ~17 km southeast📍 | Docked |
Amasra is walkable enough to do independently, but the surrounding region rewards organized trips — especially the surreal lava columns and the UNESCO town of Safranbolu.
The castle crowns a rocky peninsula and encompasses Roman foundations, Byzantine walls, Genoese towers, and an Ottoman mosque that was once a 9th-century church. The Kemere Bridge links the mainland to Boztepe Island for classic panoramic shots.
Find Amasra castle tours →A well-curated collection spanning 5,000 years — Hellenistic statues, Roman reliefs, Byzantine icons, Genoese coats-of-arms, and Ottoman artifacts. One of the better small-town museums on the Turkish Black Sea coast.
Find Amasra museum tickets →Short (30–60 min) wooden-boat tours depart from the harbor and circle Amasra's peninsula, pass beneath the castle walls, and visit Rabbit Island (Tavşan Adası) — a tiny islet populated by semi-wild rabbits.
Find Amasra boat tours →About 40 minutes by taxi, these 80-million-year-old basalt columns rise dramatically from the Black Sea shoreline. Wooden walkways and observation terraces make them accessible; the scenery rivals Cappadocia for geological drama.
Find Güzelcehisar day trips →Turkey's best-preserved Ottoman town sits about 1.75–2 hrs inland. Cobblestone lanes, centuries-old timber mansions, and the smell of the saffron-scented lokum the town is named for. Only realistic with an early port arrival and a long call.
Find Safranbolu tours from Amasra →Just outside Amasra, this carved Roman road marker (built under Emperor Claudius) clings to a cliff above the sea. The short hike and cliff-edge views of the Black Sea make it a quick but memorable stop.
Find Kuşkayası excursions →Amasra's peninsula is extremely walkable — the castle, museum, bazaar, and both harbor beaches can all be covered on foot in half a day.
Start at Büyük Liman (Big Harbour), walk along the waterfront to the Kemere Bridge, cross to Boztepe Island for castle views, then loop back through the narrow bazaar streets of Çekiciler Street before finishing at the museum.
A flat, relaxed walk from the cruise pier along the harbor front to Küçük Liman (Small Harbour) beach. Good for a quick swim, a seafood lunch, and photos of the fishing boats.
