Tender to the village

  • 1
Ship tenders to the waterfrontShips anchor offshore and run their own tenders (or hire local boats) to the Alter do Chão public dock. Allow 10–20 minutes each way; tender frequency depends on your ship.
  • 2
Village square is steps awayThe tender landing puts you right at the edge of the village. The central praça, craft market, and beach access to Lago Verde are all within a short walk.
  • 3
Ilha do Amor by canoe or wadingDuring the dry season (July–December) the water level drops and Ilha do Amor is reachable by a short canoe trip or even on foot through shallow water. Local boatmen charge a small fee.

💡 Pro move: This is a genuine remote Amazon port with minimal tourist infrastructure. No ATMs are reliable here — bring Brazilian Reais in small bills from Santarém or your ship's exchange. Expedition and river cruise ships are the most common callers.

Insider Tips

  • 📅
Timing is everything. Ilha do Amor is at its best July–December when water levels are low and the white sand is fully exposed. In the wet season (Jan–June) much of it disappears under rising water.
  • 💵
Bring Reais in small bills. There are no reliable ATMs in the village. Stock up in Santarém or exchange cash on the ship before going ashore. Most vendors don't take cards.
  • 🦟
Use strong insect repellent. You're in the Amazon. Mosquitoes are present, especially near the forest and at dusk. DEET-based repellent and long sleeves for jungle excursions are strongly recommended.
  • 🐬
Watch for pink river dolphins. The boto (Amazon river dolphin) frequents the Tapajós near Alter do Chão. Local fishermen sometimes attract them with fish — a genuine Amazon highlight.
  • 🍹
Try açaí and tacacá. Local stalls sell fresh açaí (nothing like the frozen exported version) and tacacá, a tangy Amazonian street soup with jambu leaves that cause a mild tingling sensation.
  • 🚤
Tender schedules matter here. With no fixed port infrastructure, tender operations depend entirely on weather and river conditions. Check your ship's schedule and don't cut it close returning to the dock.
