Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain

Straddling the narrowest point between Europe and Africa, Algeciras punches well above its size — a working port city that hands cruisers a remarkable menu: the Rock of Gibraltar, a fast ferry to Tangier, kite-surf mecca Tarifa, or simply the old quarter's sherry bars and Moorish walls.

⚓ Docked (North dock or Isla Verde quay)🕒 Typical call: 8-10 hrs💶 Euro (EUR)🗣️ Spanish
Docking
All ships dock — no tendering. Large ships use the 1,000 m North dock (free shuttle to centre); smaller vessels berth at Isla Verde Interior Quay (~10-min walk to town).
Walk to centre
10-15 min on foot from the North dock via free port shuttle; Isla Verde quay is walkable in ~10 min.

The Rock of Gibraltar's Barbary macaques and St. Michael's Cave; or a fast ferry to Tangier

Getting Ashore

All cruise ships dock at the Port of Algeciras — no tenders required.

Getting Ashore in Algeciras

  • 1
North Dock (large ships)The port authority runs complimentary shuttle buses from the North dock to the city centre — a 10-minute ride. Look for signs at the gangway exit.
  • 2
Isla Verde Interior Quay (smaller ships)Ships up to 150 m berth here. The city centre is a 10-minute walk via the 'Paco de Lucía' port access gate — signposted.
  • 3
City centre on footOnce in the centre, Plaza Alta is the natural starting point. The bus station (for Gibraltar/Tarifa/Sevilla) is a 15-min walk or short taxi ride.
  • 4
Taxis & transportTaxis rank outside both terminal areas. Expect ~€8-12 to the bus station. Rideshares work in the city but cannot cross into Gibraltar.

Insider Tips

  • 🛂
Gibraltar requires your passport. A national ID card is sufficient for EU citizens, but non-EU cruisers must carry a full passport to cross the frontier — same applies for the Morocco ferry.
  • 🚌
The North dock shuttle is free — use it. It runs continuously during port calls. Walking the North dock perimeter takes over 20 min on industrial roads; the shuttle is faster and cooler.
  • Tarifa is better than Algeciras for the Morocco ferry. Tarifa's FRS ferry goes to Tangier Ville (city-centre port, 1 hr), while Algeciras ferries go to Tangier MED (suburban port, needs taxi to city). If Morocco is your goal, take the bus to Tarifa.
  • 🐒
Gibraltar cable car is closed until 2027. Don't plan around it. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is accessible by foot (steep) or local taxi — and the Apes' Den, St. Michael's Cave, and WWII Tunnels are all worth it regardless.
  • 💶
Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound (GIP), roughly at parity with GBP. Euros and UK pounds are accepted in most shops but change is returned in GIP. ATMs at the border dispense GIP.
