Insider Tips

  • Ferry to Spain is a must. The 5-minute crossing to Sanlúcar de Guadiana is cheap and one of the most memorable moments of a stop here — even just for a coffee and a look around.
  • 🧗
Book the zipline in advance. The Limite Zero cross-border zipline is popular and has limited slots per day — reserve online before your cruise if you know you'll be in port.
  • 💶
Cash is king in Alcoutim. The village is small and traditional; bring euros in small bills for the ferry, local cafes, and the castle entrance fee.
  • ☀️
Inland Algarve gets hot. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F). Carry water, wear sun protection, and plan strenuous activity for the morning.
  • 🏛️
The castle museum is genuinely good. The Archaeological Museum inside Castelo de Alcoutim punches well above its weight for a village this size — allow at least 45 minutes.
