Getting Ashore

Cruise ships do not dock at Alang itself — the yard is an active industrial zone. Ships typically use Bhavnagar port or anchor offshore, with Alang reached by road.

Getting to Alang

  • 1
Tender or pier at BhavnagarMost calls use Bhavnagar's small commercial port (~50 km northwest of Alang). Confirm with your ship whether tendering or a pier berth is in use.
  • 2
Road transfer to AlangThe drive from Bhavnagar to Alang takes about 1–1.5 hours on NH 51. Hire a taxi from the pier; agree on a return time. Tour operators in Bhavnagar offer guided day trips.
  • 3
Viewing the yardThe coastal road (SH 25) runs alongside the breaking plots. The best free views of ships under demolition are from this public road. Entering any active plot requires a Gujarat Maritime Board permit.
  • 4
Salvage marketThe sprawling bazaar along the road sells salvaged ship fittings — lifejackets, portholes, brass fittings, crockery, and furniture. Bargaining is expected.

💡 Pro move: Foreign nationals wishing to enter the active yard must obtain a No Objection Certificate from India's Ministry of External Affairs in advance — not feasible on a cruise day call. The roadside view and market are open without permits.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Alang has no passenger pier; cruise calls use Bhavnagar port as the closest practical landing point.

Top Excursions

The yard itself is the draw, but Gujarat's surroundings offer extraordinary day-trip options if the ship allows enough time.

Insider Tips

  • 📷
No photography inside the yard. Gujarat Maritime Board rules strictly prohibit cameras inside any active plot. Shoot from the public coastal road — the views are dramatic enough.
  • 🎫
Permits for foreigners take weeks. An NOC from India's Ministry of External Affairs is required for foreign nationals to enter the plots — not possible on a day call. Roadside access is free and permit-free.
  • 🌡️
Avoid monsoon season (June–September). Operations slow dramatically and coastal roads can flood. The best visits are November to February when weather is mild and activity is at its peak.
  • 💰
Bargain hard at the salvage market. Ship portholes, brass telegraphs, crockery, and navigation instruments are all sold here. Prices start high for obvious tourists — halve the asking price as an opening bid.
  • 🚕
Pre-negotiate taxi fares in Bhavnagar. A round-trip taxi from Bhavnagar pier to Alang and back should cost ₹800–₹1,200. Agree on the price and a pickup time before you leave the dock area.
