Getting Ashore

Al Wajh is a tender port — ships anchor offshore and operate shuttle tenders to the commercial dock about 5 km from the town centre.

Getting Ashore at Al Wajh

  • 1
Tender to the dockShips anchor in the bay; ship-operated tenders run to the commercial pier. Collect a tender ticket if demand is high — check announcements onboard.
  • 2
Clear the terminalA basic cruise reception area handles arrivals. Saudi Arabia requires a tourist visa or cruise visa — confirm your cruise line has arranged group clearance before departure.
  • 3
Join your excursion or find transportPre-booked ship excursions load at the pier. Independent travellers can hire local taxis at the dock, but Hegra/AlUla trips almost always go through organised tours given the distance.

💡 Pro move: Independent travel to Hegra is only realistic with a private guide pre-arranged before sailing — the ~4 hr each-way coach ride leaves little margin for improvisation.

Top Excursions

The headline draw is Hegra — Nabataean rock-cut tombs about 4 hours away — but the local Red Sea reefs and Al Wajh's own market and corniche offer a full day closer to port.

History

Hegra (Madain Salih) — Saudi Arabia's First UNESCO Site

The centrepiece of any Al Wajh call. Over 100 monumental tombs carved into sandstone inselbergs by the Nabataean civilisation in the 1st century AD — the kingdom's second city after Petra and far less visited. Qasr al-Farid, the solitary 'Lonely Castle' tomb, is the iconic shot. Allow a full day.

Red Sea Snorkelling & Diving

The reef systems off Al Wajh are among the Red Sea's least-dived — vivid coral gardens, reef fish, and the occasional wreck in warm, clear water. Ship-organised snorkel trips run from the tender dock; dive operators require advance booking.

Island-Hopping in the Al Wajh Lagoon

Insider Tips

  • 🪪
Visa matters: Saudi Arabia requires a tourist or e-visa. Most cruise lines arrange a group shore-pass — confirm before sailing; individual visas can be issued online but must be sorted in advance.
  • ☀️
Heat is serious: Al Wajh sits in one of the world's hottest regions. Call days outside October–March can see 35–45 °C. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat for any outdoor time.
  • 👗
Dress modestly: Saudi Arabia expects conservative dress in public — shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. This is especially important on the Hegra excursion and in the town souk.
  • 🕐
Book Hegra early: Entry to the Hegra archaeological site requires advance reservation (online or through your cruise line). Ship excursions handle this — independent travellers must pre-book via the AlUla Experience platform.
  • 💳
Cash & cards: Saudi riyals are the local currency; international cards work in hotels and larger outlets near AlUla but carry some SAR cash for the local souk.
