Getting Ashore

All ships tender into Agats — there is no quay for large vessels. Tides and river conditions can affect timing.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to the landingShip tenders ferry passengers to a basic riverside landing. The operation can be slow; expedition staff will coordinate timing around tidal windows.
  • 2
Walk the boardwalksAgats has no paved roads — the entire town moves along raised wooden boardwalks built above the tidal flats. From the landing, all major sites are reachable on foot.
  • 3
Village visits by speedboatExcursions to outer Asmat villages (e.g. Syuru) depart by zodiac or local speedboat from the riverbank. Most are arranged through the ship.

💡 Pro move: Dress modestly and bring cash (IDR); there are no ATMs or card readers in town. Sturdy footwear with grip helps on the sometimes-slippery boardwalks.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

No cruise pier exists — all landings are by tender to a riverbank or basic dock.

Boardwalk Town Walk

Wander Agats's own streets — which happen to be elevated wooden walkways suspended above tidal mud. The local market, Catholic mission buildings, and tribal monument give the feel of a town that exists entirely on its own terms.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring IDR cash. There are no ATMs in Agats and no card acceptance. Stock up before arrival — the ship's currency exchange is your best option.
  • 📸
Always ask before photographing people, especially children and elders. The Asmat are gracious hosts but privacy matters — a nod and a smile go a long way.
  • 👟
Wear grippy closed-toe shoes. The boardwalks can be wet and uneven. Flip-flops are risky; sandals with ankle straps are the minimum.
  • 🌧️
Expect humidity and rain. Agats sits in a tropical rainforest climate. A light rain jacket and insect repellent are worth packing ashore.
  • Tender queues can be long. Agats sees few ships and local tender infrastructure is basic. Head ashore in the first wave if you want maximum time at the museum or a village trip.
